Room to Read
John Wood
Fellowship Awarded 2002

Room to Read's mission is to provide underprivileged children in the developing world with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. They do so by partnering with communities to build schools, establish bi-lingual libraries, and publish children's books in local languages. The organization also establishes computer labs to teach core skills and provides long-term, comprehensive scholarships for young girls. Founded in 2000, Room to Read now operates in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, South Africa and Zambia - countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. To date, the organization has impacted the lives of over 1.7 million children through its various programs, including over 440 schools, 5,100 bi-lingual libraries and 4,000 scholarships for girls.

John Wood spent the majority of his professional career as an executive with Microsoft from 1991-1999. He left the company in order to devote "the second chapter of my adult life" to providing access to education and literacy for millions of children across the developing world.

Since receiving the Draper Richards Foundation grant, Room to Read has received of the Fast Company/Monitor Group "Social Capitalist Award" four times. Room to Read is also a two-time winner of the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship and was featured at the 2007 Clinton Global Initiative.
